OVERVIEW:

ANSER enhances national and homeland security by strengthening public institutions. We provide thought leadership for complex issues through independent analysis, and we deliver practical, useful solutions. ANSER values collaboration, integrity, and initiative and we are client focused in all that we do. Because we were established for the purpose of public service and not for profit, we measure our success in the impact of our service.

POSITION SUMMARY

ANSER is seeking an engineer to support energy resilience efforts for the Department of Defense (DoD) installations and facilities. Our group leads systems analysis efforts focusing on the gaps between infrastructure and operational requirements, and executes live exercises for testing energy and cyber resilience posture. Projects are conducted in an intimate and small team environment.

This position requires 50 to 75% travel. Travel is scheduled in advance with appropriate notice.

Day to day responsibilities:

  • Work with a team of cross-disciplinary analysts, scientists and engineers to:
    • Understand existing power systems, their capabilities, drawbacks, risks, and needs.
    • Perform analysis and synthesize findings from risk and gap identification to identify technology, process, or policy needs; and to develop new power system designs, so that we can rapidly deploy technology solutions to operators and provide guidance to senior leaders in the U.S. government.
  • Work with a team to analyze and develop architectures, software, and security controls to increase the resilience of energy control systems that interface with microgrid equipment, protection relays, generators, critical loads, batteries, solar, and power converters.
  • Work hands-on with existing power system control system platforms to develop algorithms, perform data analysis, interface software with hardware devices, and manage the resulting data.
  • Travel to Department of Defense installations to determine existing capabilities, design mission and system tests, and to improve the security and resilience of those systems.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field or a bachelor’s degree with 2-5+ years of work experience
  • Experience and interest in the operation of power system devices and the bulk electric power grid, in the controls systems that operate those devices, and methods to increase resilience to natural, man-made, and climate-induced failures.
  • Active DoD Secret clearance
  • Familiarity with electrical power systems infrastructure, equipment, operations, and documentation (e.g., one-line diagrams, load flow, transmission and distribution topology).
  • Familiarity with other utility infrastructure systems (e.g., communications, water, pipelines).
  • Experience with real-time hardware and simulation platforms, power system simulation tools, and industrial control system protocols.
  • Knowledge of system programming languages.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work effectively with a high level of uncertainty and conflicting or limited information
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new technical areas and apply that knowledge to solve challenging problems
  • The ability to clearly present complicated technical concepts to a wide range of audiences.

The base pay for this position ranges from $100,000 to $150,000 annually. Pay is based on several factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
